Birch House is situated in Peterculter, also known as Culter, eight miles from Aberdeen and Banchory both of which offer a good selection of shops and leisure options. Nearby are the castles of Crathes and Balmoral, the latter being the royal residence of the Queen when she visits Scotland.

Our dedicated team provides a range of care, supporting people with Asperger’s, autism, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, epilepsy, spina bifida and hydrocephalus, as well as speech impairments and behaviours that challenge. We also support those with moderate to profound and multiple learning disabilities.

Accommodation

Birch House is a modern building that contains six single rooms, three en-suite rooms and two flats with their own lounge and kitchen. The bedrooms provide a high standard of accommodation for those who want privacy but also like the interaction that comes with shared facilities. Whatever room is chosen they are all very well adapted and can meet a wide variety of personal needs.

There is an open-plan dining area and lounge allows for social interaction, whilst providing space for those residents who want to be by themselves. The sensory garden provides a relaxing external environment that helps residents to take a step back from the main activities of Birch House.

Birch House’s features include:

  • Modern building
  • Open-plan dining and lounge area
  • Varied activities, with dedicated activities person
  • Sensory gardens
  • Access to hairdressing, reflexology and physiotherapy

Our team

Our care team is on-hand 24 hours a day, every day of the year and staff are dedicated to delivering care with kindness.

To ensure we continue to provide the best standards of care and support to our residents, we recruit and train only the best staff.

Whilst they receive a variety of on-going training to ensure their skills remain up-to-date, along with an enhanced PVG check, it is their dedication to our residents which makes them truly special.

Activities

We believe it is important that our residents spend their time as they choose, so have a dedicated activities person to support them to take part in interesting activities, rekindle old past times and try new things.

The home has an excellent relationship with Create Aberdeen and our residents attend their weekday activity sessions. We welcome a range of visitors into Birch House who both help to entertain and motivate our residents. They include: The Puppet Gang; an Elvis impersonator; a karaoke host, Music for Hospitals and the Cat’s Pyjamas.

There is a wide range of group activities that residents can choose to take part in including baking and cookery, plus creative arts and crafts. We also ensure that residents spend time on personal interests in one-to-one sessions as well as celebrating special occasions.

Residents enjoy getting out in the local community by going for walks, shopping, seeing a movie at the cinema and attending college.

All residents have access to the services of a hairdresser, reflexologist and physiotherapist; this is to help them achieve a positive balance between having an active life and the need to relax.

Care and Support

We pride ourselves on treating people as individuals, so all our residents have care plans tailored to their individual medical, social and emotional needs. We review care plans on a regular basis and involve family and friends in this process wherever possible.

The range of personal care services we can provide, in partnership with local professionals, include:

  • Chiropody
  • Hairdressing
  • Optical care
  • Dental care
  • GP
  • Key worker

Home-cooked meals

Our catering team prides themselves on preparing nutritious, seasonal home-cooked meals.

Residents help us to shape the menus and our catering team spends time with them to get feedback on the dishes and their likes and dislikes. They are also able to cater for a variety of dietary requirements.
