A great-grandmother to 11 in Harrow is celebrating her 101st birthday today with family and friends.
Edith Gatfield is rejoicing her milestone birthday at Sanctuary Care’s Rowanweald Residential and Nursing Home in Weald Lane, where she has lived for six months.
Her three sons Peter, Robert and Maurice said: “She is a wonderful mother and we will always be proud of her.”
All started on Thursday 7 October 1915…
Born on Thursday 7 October 1915, the birthday girl was raised in Hanworth, Middlesex with her sister Nellie, where she stayed throughout her younger years while attending school in the local area.
The two sisters were always close growing up, and found love with the Gatfield brothers.
Edith and Charlie Gatfield instantly hit it off and married in 1939, with the pair going on to have three sons – Peter who now lives in Kingsbury, Robert from Bracknell and Maurice in Stevenage.
While Edith stayed at home to look after her three sons, the family of five found home in Ealing until 1949, before moving to Colindale until 1959 and then making Queensbury their forever home – where Edith stayed until this year.
“Mum was always there for us”
Her sons continued: “Mum was always there for us when growing up and it’s wonderful that not only have our children but also our grandchildren have had the privilege of meeting her.”
The Gatfield family has now blossomed to four generations with seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The Sanctuary Care home’s activities leader said: “Edith is such a lovely lady, she is very warm and it’s wonderful to see her loved ones come together for such a special day for her – happy birthday Edith.”
