Residents at a Sanctuary Care home in Bridgwater are getting into the festive spirit packing shoeboxes full of gifts for the armed forces who are away from home at Christmas.
The team and residents at The Rosary Nursing Home on Mayfield Drive are rallying behind national charity, Support Our Soldiers to spread festive cheer this Christmas time.
“My father would have been proud”
The colourful shoe boxes have been filled to the brim with Santa hats, travel games, Christmas cakes and snacks ready to be delivered worldwide to members of the British Armed Forces who are serving overseas away from their families.
Speaking of the donations 92-year-old resident, Joan Hurford said: “My father was a solider and there were many times that he wasn’t at home for birthdays and Christmas.
“These boxes are a wonderful idea and it’s nice to give back something for those who give so much. I felt comfort and warmth making the boxes and my father would have been proud.”
The Rosary’s home manager Natali Edwards added: “Our residents have really enjoyed creating their gift boxes and can’t wait for them to be delivered worldwide.
“We are really proud to be supporting all of our armed forces who will be spending Christmas away from home and their loved ones.”
The Bridgwater home will also be hosting a number of festive treats for the community to enjoy including:
- Switch on of Winter Wonderland lights at the home’s Christmas Fayre, complete with a variety of stalls and festive refreshments on Saturday 2 December from 2pm to 5pm.
- Festive afternoon tea with mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies on Friday 15 December from 2.30pm to 4.30pm
Natali added: “We are so looking forward to welcoming new and familiar faces from the community into our home.
“It’s such a happy time of the year and our residents can’t wait to share their festive cheer.”
