Dad’s journey from home care to Nunthorpe Oaks  

When Gordon, who was extremely self-sufficient and cooked himself three-course meals each day, started having falls and was struggling to live as he wanted, daughter Pamela put a home care package in place.

“He was used to home-cooked meals and they would send someone in to help with his lunch, but they meant a meal that they could put in the microwave,” Pamela explains.

“I understand that they are busy, so I brought some nice meals that they could put in the oven, but they didn’t have the time and needed something which they could pop in the microwave for just a few minutes. They were kind and looked after him, but he was still on his own.”

Gordon was becoming more isolated, living in a rural village and no longer able to drive to get his shopping.

Following another fall doctors discovered he had a heart condition and Pamela was told it wasn’t safe for him to live alone.

After looking at 17 different care homes, Pamela knew he’d be very happy at our Nunthorpe Oaks Residential Care Home in Middlesbrough - six years on the team are still enriching his life in so many ways.

“There was nowhere that came close to Nunthorpe Oaks and I’m completely relieved he is there,” she explains. “They are very caring – when you visit you can see just how caring they are.

“There is always someone to pop their head around the door to say hello and the team are always updating me on how he is, which is a weight off my mind.”
