Millport Care Centre is located in the quiet coastal town of Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae and is only 100 metres from a sandy beach. The island can be accessed via regular ferry crossings, which take just under 10 minutes and start from the coastal town of Largs on the North Ayrshire coast.

The care centre has a long history on the island. It was originally a Victorian hotel that was modernised and then converted. We have made a number of purpose-built extensions to continually develop the property to meet the evolving needs of our residents.

We support people over the age of 16 with complex care needs stemming from physical or learning disabilities, autism and challenging behaviours.

Accommodation

There are 25 single bedrooms and 1 twin room spread over two floors. All rooms are en-suite with a WC and wash basin, some also have a shower. Those residents without a shower in their room have access to a shared shower room and bathroom. There are three lounge areas, one with a full kitchen and one with a small kitchen area. Both of these have dining areas. The third lounge area has an additional small quiet sitting area and large separate dining space. Our large patio has a decked area which allows residents to make the most of the sunshine.

Our team

Our team is a dynamic mix of qualified nurses, behaviour coaches and support workers. Senior staff are experienced in delivering their high standard of care for this complex client group. All staff members are trained to a high standard and supported to develop skills and gain qualifications in supporting the needs of the individuals. They deliver a robust level of care and are capable of practicing the therapeutic management of aggressive and violent behaviour which enables them to care and support adults with extremely challenging behaviours.

Activities

Millport is more than a home; it is the base from which all residents fulfil active lives as part of the island community and beyond. Our residents are never short of things to do, from going out for a day’s cycling to catching the ferry to the mainland to watch a film. Some residents return home for lunch while others enjoy eating in local cafes or they grab a snack on the mainland. Evenings are usually taking a walk on the beach, cooking dinner or relaxing in front of the television.

Hairdressing and chiropody can be provided onsite, but residents often prefer to access such services directly in their community. We run art and craft sessions in-house but again there are many activities like this available in the area which gives our residents an opportunity to mix with local people.

Whatever support needs a person has, we will never place a limitation on what they can do on the island and beyond. We encourage residents to take full advantage of the stunning countryside on their doorstep. Many choose to birdwatch – opportunities to birdwatch and practice photography are excellent on the island – we organise lots of individual and group walks, opportunities to cycle in the fresh air, watching the boats come in and out or watching the local pipe band who perform regularly on the pier.

Away from island life, we can support overnight visits to events like the Edinburgh Tattoo, theatre trips and we go on group holidays to other beautiful parts of the country. Other residents use the mainland to attend college and to access work or volunteering opportunities.

At Millport, our greatest achievement is providing a home in a caring and supportive environment and we will always encourage residents to experience life to the full outside our doors.

Care and Support

We pride ourselves on treating people as individuals, so all our residents have care plans tailored to their individual medical, social and emotional needs. We review care plans on a regular basis and involve family and friends in this process wherever possible.

Home-cooked meals

Our catering team prides themselves on preparing nutritious, seasonal home-cooked meals, along with mouth-watering home-baked cakes for afternoon tea.

Residents help us to shape the menus and our catering team spends time with them to get feedback on the dishes and their likes and dislikes. They are also able to cater for a variety of dietary requirements.
