Keeping active in Kilmarnock

Sharing a minibus with Sanctuary Care’s Glenfairn House Care Home in Ayr, we regularly take our residents on outings. Many love to visit the Whitelee Windfarm in Eaglesham, the Riverside Museum, Glasgow’s award-winning transport museum and Dumfries House in Cumnock, Ayrshire.

Our residents love to get dressed up to go to tea dances in Troon. They also visit Centrestage in Kilmarnock for sing-alongs and attend coffee mornings at the nearby Howard Centre. Some also like to meet up with fellow residents at Glenfairn House when we visit for afternoon tea. We also link up with another nursing home in the area when entertainers are performing there.

Another popular place to go is the nearby Portmann Hotel, where residents enjoy afternoon tea. We also take part in a project with Alzheimer Scotland, which organises ‘football memories’ reminiscence events. These afternoons are wonderful, especially for our residents living with dementia. They have the opportunity to relive happy memories from their younger days watching matches with their friends. It is also a chance to socialise with residents from other care and nursing homes in Kilmarnock.

In the summer we organise barge trips with the Seagull Trust Cruises, which provide canal excursions for people with mobility needs and disabilities, with wheelchair accessible boats. These trips are so inclusive and are perfect for our residents, some of whom have a wide range of health and mobility needs, from epilepsy and Huntington’s disease to acquired brain injuries and dementia.

Lots of friendly faces

With two dedicated activities leaders, Howard House is a thriving home with plenty going on. The wide variety of activities on offer was highlighted in our recent Care Inspectorate report. Every Sunday we get the fine china out for afternoon tea. With beautiful tiered cake stands filled with strawberry tarts, cupcakes and scones lovingly created baked by our chef Amanda. This is also a lovely activity for our residents’ loved ones to take part in.

Toddlers from the local nursery pop in every week to join us for activities, and our residents are often invited there in return. Volunteers from ‘Art in a Suitcase’, a group that runs art classes for people living with dementia in Ayrshire, also visit regularly, much to the delight of our residents.

Different church groups from the area hold services especially for our residents in the heart of the care home. This is a wonderful opportunity for those with higher nursing care needs to worship. A mobile hairdresser also visits every week for appointments.

We are very lucky to have some truly fantastic relatives who work hard to support our care home. In the summer they raised a staggering £1,000 towards for our activities fund with a sponsored walk.  Our residents have been enjoying some lovely days out with this money.

Food glorious food

Having been a chef at Howard House for over 10 years, Amanda knows exactly how to please our residents. She spends time getting to know everyone individually, their nutritional needs and what they love to eat. Every day she chats with the residents to make sure they are enjoying their meals and to find inspiration for different dishes they might like. As well as a talented baker, she also makes delicious smoothies for our residents, bursting with their five a day.

Many of our residents love to roll up their sleeves to get involved with cooking. We recently held a Howard House bake off, where we made scones, shortbreads and brownies. A group of residents regularly sit in the conservatory and prepare the vegetables for Amanda to use that day. The secure garden at the back of the home is also used to ’grow our own’, from tomatoes and strawberries to aromatic herbs.

Situated close to the town centre, the home has excellent transport links. Kilmarnock Train Station is nearby and we are a short walk from the main bus routes to North and South Ayrshire.

Pricing Information

It is usual for residents in care homes to contribute to the cost of their own care. Some people have the resources to pay for their accomodation in full, whilst others make means-tested contributions. Our weekly fees vary dependent on the type of bedroom that is right for you, from our standard rooms through to our premium bedroom options. Prices start from £850 and may increase to £1,120 dependent on your bedroom choice.
