Celebrating Christmas in our Care Homes
This year has been like no other, but one thing that’s not going to change is our teams will be pulling out all the stops to make sure our residents have an amazing Christmas! The magic will be starting a little earlier this year across all our homes – and here’s just a flavour of what’s in store as we know many of you are wondering “how do residents celebrate Christmas in a Sanctuary Care home?” Well, here’s how…
For us, Christmas isn’t cancelled!
Our devoted staff are more determined than ever to make Christmas 2020 extra special for our residents. The Christmas trees in some of our care homes are up and the festive-related activities are in full swing. And our care home Christmas decorations are not just for the indoors! Outside, many of our gardens are being transformed into a magical winter wonderland as well.
The sound of music
And talking of winter wonderlands – where would we be without the sound of music? This year, we will be making our very own rendition of the ‘Winter Wonderland’ classic, thanks to the launch of our national virtual choir.
Our staff and residents will be joining forces to create their very own choir in each of our 100 care homes. Complete with make-shift instruments and song sheets, even those who are not musically gifted have been warming up those vocal cords! And as practice makes perfect, after a few weeks of choir rehearsals, all our fabulous care home choirs have performed together, virtually, to bring festive cheer.
And here is that very special performance. Sanctuary Care is proud to introduce you to our National Care Choir:
Connecting with local youngsters
It’s no surprise with Government lockdowns over the past year, we are unable to welcome our usual young guests from our nearby schools and nurseries. But that isn’t stopping us. For many of our homes, we are maintaining those special bonds with the use of technology, by enjoying a virtual sneak preview of a pantomime and carol concert or two.
Many of our homes have also thought of other ways for these intergenerational celebrations to continue as well, with a firm favourite being festive pen pals or homemade Christmas card exchanges. We are definitely keeping our local posties busy!
Christmas dinner with all the trimmings
Food, glorious food. Just like your Christmas, food (and mulled wine!) are a focal point of our care home festive celebrations. For the big day itself, our talented and award-winning chefs are set to pull out all the stops on Christmas day to ensure the veg is prepped, the turkey is basted to perfection and their home is filled with the aroma of mulled wine! Our residents will enjoy a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, followed by Christmas pudding and whipped cream or brandy butter for that extra bit of indulgence.
Rest assured that during the festivities our staff, as they always have been, will be following the coronavirus guidance to enable our residents to celebrate safely. They will still be wearing the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure our residents stay safe while having the most fabulous time.
Christmas surrounded by love
And enriching lives is something we are so proud of. Heartbreakingly, on average 225,000 people over the age of 65 can go over a week without talking to anyone. Thankfully, this doesn’t include our residents – to our teams they are like an extended family and they surround them with love and happiness.
Every year our staff spend precious time with our residents on Christmas day, ensuring they have the most amazing time. And the same is happening this year, with so many of our staff swapping Christmas jumpers for their uniforms and heading off for a care home Christmas.
And although Christmas is a big celebration in our care home calendar, our teams are here 365 days a year, 24/7 to deliver the best possible care and truly person-centred activities all year round. You can find out how we are enriching lives at this time, or any time of the year, by following us on social media (Facebook and Twitter) or speaking with our Enquiry Support Team.
