A fond farewell to someone very special - Jill retires after more than 25 years

Jill Pearce, care home manager at Regent Residential Care Home in Worcester

There won’t be a dry eye in the house when a much-loved Worcester care home manager retires this week.

When Jill Pearce, who has worked in Sanctuary Care’s homes for over 25 years, joined Regent Residential Care Home in St John’s, little did she know what a special place it would have in her heart.

Over 10 years later, at the age of 70, Jill retires with some wonderful memories and lots of plans to keep her busy - including her first ever music festival!

For Jill, who is also a carer for her 95-year-old father, her passion has always been enriching the lives of her residents.

“I just love people,” she says. “You do everything you possibly can for every resident – you try to help them keep their independence. It’s about dignity, love and honesty.”

Jill wasn’t always sure she had the confidence to progress to home manager because of her dyslexia, but has worked extra hard not to let it stand in her way.

“Being dyslexic should never stop you, because it’s what’s in your heart that’s important when working in care,” she says.

For Jill. the team at Regent (some of whom have also worked there for over 10 years) are the backbone of the home.

“When people come to Regent they say there’s a special feeling when you walk in – even newer staff say they feel like they’ve been here forever – and that is down to the team,” she says.

“You want the best for your residents - we work as a team and we pull together with everything.”

Jill’s daughter Becki also followed in her footsteps and joined the home as a team leader and is now one of our national care trainers.

She says: “I always tell everyone if you have that drive and want to progress, then go to Sanctuary Care.”

Knowing how much Jill will miss Regent, her husband Tony and her family, which includes five grandchildren, have planned an action-packed year. There’s a trip away every month and lots of new experiences, including Jill’s first ever music festival, which will double up as her first camping trip!

She says: “I will really miss it here, but it’s time. It’s a new chapter and I can’t still be here when I am 80!”
