“I am proud to enrich lives every day” – Helen’s “joy” working at Regent
When you meet activities coordinator Helen, she exudes so much energy and passion it’s easy to see why she’s stayed at Regent Residential Care Home in Worcester for 13 years.
“I absolutely love it,” she says. “It’s arriving in the morning and seeing the residents’ faces light up as they say ‘what are we going to do today?”
For Helen, the most important part of her role is knowing she is enriching the lives of her residents every day.
She says: “I love that when I go home, I know I have made a difference to someone’s life. Whether that’s compassion and being there, having fun or helping someone to do something they thought they couldn’t do, the feeling is incredible!”
Helen is fascinated by her residents’ life histories. “Everyone has a journey and it’s an absolute honour and privilege to go back and reminisce with them and for them to share things with me,” she adds.
And helping her residents to achieve something meaningful to them personally gives her such a sense of achievement. She recalls how one resident often talked about how she would visit the seaside with her late husband, so Helen made it happen. The happiness she felt as she watched the resident beam with joy, while eating fish and chips on the promenade was so rewarding.
“What motivates me is making the residents happy and encouraging and enabling them. It’s seeing them blossom, find choice and helping them to build friendships. It’s the joy I have in my day - I am proud to enrich lives every day.”
Having been part of Regent for over a decade, Helen couldn’t see herself anywhere else. “When I walk in it feels like a home. At Regent we’re a family and that’s what makes it special.”
