Redannick activity role is “amazing”

Katie Cooper from Redannick

Bringing the outside in and supporting residents to do the things they love is part of Katie Cooper’s daily routine at Redannick Care Home in Truro.

Newly appointed to the role of activities coordinator, Katie gave up her job as a recruitment agent to get back into the care sector, and is very happy she did!

“I was activities assistant at another home for more than two years after I left school and then went on to become a professional carer for seven years,” said Katie. “I went into recruitment to try something different but really missed the sense of fulfilment working in care gave me.

“I first got into it when my nan was seriously ill. She and my grandad helped bring me up so, when she became bed bound, I helped look after her. I carried on caring when she died because it was something I enjoyed and got a lot out of. That’s why I’m back. This is so much more rewarding.”

Redannick is one of 13 former Cornwall Care homes that are now being run by Sanctuary Care.

“My job is all about getting to know each resident as an individual and ensuring they are physically and mentally stimulated in a way that best suits them and makes them happy,” said Katie. “Since starting five months ago, I’ve organised for a local nursery to come in and arranged a day-long summer fete. I use music to motivate memory, set up FaceTime calls with families, chat on a one-to-one basis with everyone daily and generally encourage participation and independence.

“I take people out to do things they love as well. One lady here has always been a very keen gardener, for example, so I’m taking her to Malpas to see the flowers there. Other visits with different individuals include the beach, the shops and Truro Cathedral. Little things mean a lot and seeing someone smile is as wonderful for me as it is for that person’s sense of well-being and contentment.

“That’s what so amazing about care. You give and you get back. I’m proud to truly enrich lives.”
