Greenslades Celebrates our First Nursing Apprentice Graduate

Jane Cabaya graduates as a nurse

Our Greenslades home in Exeter is celebrating after one of our fabulous team members became the first-ever graduate of its Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship, part of a nationwide scheme which seeks to futureproof the care sector.

Jane, age 49, is the first apprentice from the home to gain the BSc (Hons) Nursing in Adult Health qualification. Following her success, she is now registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and has moved into a permanent role as a registered nurse at Greenslades.

Funded by not-for-profit care provider, Sanctuary Care and in partnership with Plymouth University, the apprenticeship scheme seeks to upskill care assistants and supplement nursing teams, whilst tackling recruitment challenges facing the social care sector.

Jane was a registered midwife in the Philippines before moving to England in 2005, when she joined Greenslades as a member of the senior care staff.

The Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship has enabled Jane to continue to earn an income and gain valuable sector experience, whilst studying for nationally recognised qualifications to advance her career.

She said: “Ever since I can remember, helping and caring for people has been my passion. When I joined Greenslades Nursing Home, it became my mission to make a difference in the lives of our residents and be of service to others, but pursuing a full-time university education to nursing wasn't the right route for me.

“To graduate as a registered nurse is a dream come true. I would encourage anyone contemplating a nursing apprenticeship to seize the opportunity. I firmly believe that through collective effort we can make an empirical change in the field of health care.”

Meghann Bowden, care home manager said: “We are extremely proud of Jane for completing the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship. We’ve been so impressed with how hard she has worked. Day in and day out, Jane goes above and beyond to support our care and nursing teams and enrich the lives of all our residents.

“The Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship is a great opportunity for our team members to support the nursing team in our home, whilst developing their own clinical learning and leadership skills to advance their personal careers.”
