“Try-umphant” Kings Norton Rugby Club scores £4,000 donation from Sanctuary Care

Ron Bunce receives donation on behalf of Kings Norton Rugby Club

Sanctuary Care has raised £4,000 for Kings Norton Rugby Club in Birmingham, thanks to a physical team fundraiser.

The donation will provide new training equipment and first aid training for coaches and will support the club’s junior division, providing valuable financial support to enable young players from all backgrounds to join their team on tour.

To raise the funds, the 18-strong senior operations team from Sanctuary Care embarked on a 14km trek in the Lake District, walking along the shores of Ullswater Lake and smashing their original £3,000 target.

The challenge was inspired by care home resident Ron Bunce, who lives at our Castlecroft Residential Care Home in Weoley Castle, Birmingham. Aged 74, Ron is President of Kings Norton Rugby Club. He still plays an active role in coaching the club’s youth team, the Rhinos.

He said: “We are so grateful for the generosity of everyone who donated to this challenge. The money raised by Sanctuary Care will go a long way to providing much-needed training, facilities and opportunities for our young players. Our club is run by volunteers and relies on funding and donations. This contribution will be a big help, without a shadow of a doubt.”

Ron was presented with a cheque for £4,000 by Sanctuary Care’s Director of Operations, Sheila O’Connor, who led the fundraising challenge.

Sheila commented: “Ron’s love of rugby and commitment to Kings Norton RFC inspired our team to take on this challenge. The hike was tough at times, but we are so pleased to be able to help the club, which is such a big part of the local community.

“We are passionate about enriching the communities in which we operate as well our residents’ lives. Encouraging residents, like Ron, to continue doing the things that bring them joy and a sense of purpose is one example of how we do this.

“With the help of our team, Ron still coaches rugby. We’ve even built a gym at the home so he can continue his passion for keeping fit!”
