From Stables to Smiles: Pony visits at Highcroft

Residents at Highcroft Hall Residential Care Home in Wolverhampton were recently treated to a delightful and heart-warming experience when two Shetland ponies, Lollipop and Moomin, paid a special visit. Organised by Lollipop Ponies, the visit was part of an animal therapy initiative designed to bring joy and stimulation to the home’s residents.
The ponies’ presence created a buzz of excitement throughout the home, with many residents visibly moved by the gentle and affectionate nature of the animals. Among those particularly touched was Olive Winnal, who shared the experience with her daughter. Both were amazed by the ponies and described the visit as a truly magical moment that brought smiles and warmth to their day.
For resident Sofia Stanislawski, the visit was nostalgic. Seeing the ponies brought back memories of her youth, when she owned a white horse back in her home country. The encounter stirred a deep sense of nostalgia and joy, reconnecting her with cherished moments from her past.
Home manager Shaun Peters spoke about the importance of such therapy sessions, saying, “Not only is it great stimulation for residents, it helps to brighten up their day through ‘out of the ordinary’ experiences.” He emphasised how animal therapy can have a powerful impact on emotional wellbeing, particularly for those living with dementia or limited mobility.
The ponies were even brought into the rooms of residents in bed, so that everyone was able to part take in enjoying the animals’ calming presence. The visit from Lollipop and Moomin was more than just a novelty, it was a meaningful and therapeutic experience.
