Puppy brings joy and laughter

Pets play a hugely important role in our lives, offering comfort, companionship and moments of joy. With around 62% of UK households owning a pet, it’s easy to see why we are often described as a nation of animal lovers – with a day marked to celebrate this on National Pet Day.
That love for animals doesn’t fade with age, and at our Bromsgrove based Breme Residential Care Home, animal therapy is a valued part of everyday life, helping to enrich and support residents’ wellbeing.
Recently, the home’s Deputy Manager Amy Wheatley brought along her new puppy, Millie, to meet the home’s eagerly awaiting residents. From the moment she arrived, Millie was bursting with energy and charm, quickly winning hearts throughout the home.
Her visit prompted laughter and fond memories, with many residents reminiscing about beloved family pets they had owned over the years. Resident Carol, aged 87, recalled how spending time with Millie “was lovely, and reminded me of my own dogs and rabbit.”
Breme’s care team understands the value animal companionship can offer in creating moments of comfort and continuity. While cuddling Millie, resident Binnie, aged 87, joked that she “was lovely, and no trouble!”
Amy shared how heart‑warming it was to see the residents’ reactions whilst interacting with her puppy, explaining how much all the residents “thoroughly enjoy” Millie’s regular presence in the home.
At Breme, like all Sanctuary Care homes, animals are used as a meaningful way to enrich lives. From encouraging conversation to sparking treasured memories, visits like Millie’s show just how impactful animal therapy can be.
