Birch House’s exceptional CI report

The team and residents at our care home in Peterculter are celebrating the home’s glowing Care Inspectorate (CI) report.
Birch House Care Home has received stand-out ‘Very Good’ rating for its recent report following an unannounced inspection, for how well the team support people’s wellbeing. This follows the home’s 2024 report, when again the team received ‘Very Good’ ratings for both areas inspected by the health and social care regulator.
The report highlights how the team at the home, who care for eight adults with learning disabilities, support residents to be in the driving seat by being actively involved in every aspect of life in the home. It explained: “People were encouraged to take the lead in organising activities, contributing to home life and evaluating the quality of staff. This promoted self-worth, autonomy and empowerment.”
Another stand out area was how residents were supported to achieve their goals, for example planning experiences they enjoyed, and going on holiday.
It read: “This helped build confidence. Staff supported people to maintain links within the community. For example, joining social events in the community and groups coming into the home. This helped promote social inclusion and feeling valued.”
Another highlight was how the team used their personal skills to “enhance people’s care”, from massages to bringing in animals, which “added to people’s wellbeing”.
And another stand out area in the report was how strong the teamwork in the home is, which directly benefits the residents. It read: “The team worked together to ensure the best outcomes for people. For example, changing shifts to cover absences. This meant no agency staff were used, promoting continuity of care. This resulted in people feeling confident in the care they received.”
Inspectors highlighted how family members were “very happy with the care provided”, as well as the excellent communication with staff, which meant people “felt understood and promoted inclusion”. In addition, it praised the team’s dedication to helping to “maintain and strengthen relationships that mattered to people”.
Home Manager, Pat Hutchison, said: “We’re all incredibly proud of this report, because it really reflects the spirit of Birch House. Our residents are at the heart of everything we do, and it’s so important to us that they feel confident, valued and very much in control of their own lives.
“The team go that extra mile each and every day to enrich the lives of our residents, using their individual skills and working closely together to create an incredibly supportive environment where our residents genuinely thrive.
“It’s also lovely to see the positive feedback from families, as those relationships are so important to us. This recognition means a great deal to everyone here.”
