Cicely drives for the first time - at 93!

Cicely beams behind the wheel of the car with Karen, a driving instructor

A 93-year-old resident has proven that it’s never too late to chase a dream. With the support of the team at Westmead Residential Care Home in Droitwich, Cicely Garbett recently enjoyed a driving experience for the very first time - on private land.

The idea came about when Cicely shared with Kate Lockwood, the home’s Activities Coordinator, that she had never driven and wished she had.

“I said I’d never driven and didn’t think I ever could,” she explained. “Kate asked if I’d like to try - I couldn’t believe it!”

With encouragement from the team and the gentle guidance and support of instructor Karen Bevan, of Karen Bevan Driving School, who kindly volunteered her services free of charge, Cicely was able to achieve her dream.

Beaming with pride she said: “I felt elated. I couldn’t believe I’d ever do it at my age. Turning the wheel made me feel like I can still do things.”

Despite initial nerves, Cicely embraced the moment. “Karen was so lovely — she made me feel confident and gave me my independence. I can’t thank her enough.”

The experience left Cicely feeling proud and empowered. “I felt more confident and so happy with myself. I’ve done something just for me. If you feel confident and want to achieve something, give it a try - it will feel great.”

Kate Lockwood explained: “At Westmead we are passionate about finding ways to continually enrich the lives for our residents with moments like these, helping them live life to the full and achieve their goals.”
