Roshells Story

Member of staff with certificate

Beach Lawns Care Home is celebrating the dedication and compassion of nurse Roshell, whose journey in healthcare spans more than two decades and three countries.

Born on the vibrant and beautiful island of Jamaica, Roshell describes herself as quiet, calm, caring and deeply committed to her faith, family and friendships. Her nursing career began in Jamaica, where she served for eleven years before moving to Anguilla for a further six years. She later continued her professional journey in the United Kingdom, bringing a wealth of experience shaped by diverse cultures and healthcare environments.

Roshell has been an important member of the Beach Lawns team for almost four years and recently completed an in depth dementia course to strengthen her understanding of the condition and improve the support she provides to residents and their families.

One part of the course that made a lasting impact on her was the series of video clips sharing the lived experiences of people with dementia. One particular video stood out. It portrayed how time can feel entirely different for those living with dementia, where memories from the past feel current and vivid. It also highlighted the frustration and emotional struggle that comes with fading independence and the challenge of trying to hold on to familiar routines.

Roshell shared that the reflective logs in the course helped her process what she was learning, giving her space to consider how each lesson connected to her daily work. She found the entire course to be informative and interactive, offering practical insights grounded in real life situations.

As she completed each module, Roshell recognised various forms of dementia and the stages in which they appear in residents she cares for every day. This new knowledge has strengthened her understanding of what residents, their families and other caregivers experience throughout the progression of the condition.

Roshell says this enhanced awareness will allow her to continue providing compassionate, person centred care at every stage of dementia, from early signs to advanced needs. She hopes her learning will make an even more meaningful difference to the lives of those she supports.
