Never too late to take leap forward in faith – 93-year-old Dennis’ milestone

93-year-old resident at Sanctuary Care’s Watlington & District Residential and Nursing Home has joyfully celebrated a milestone in his faith, proving that you can achieve your dreams at any age.
Dennis Minns was over the moon as he received the Sacrament of Confirmation in a moving service conducted by The Rt Revd Gavin Collins, Bishop of Dorchester at the not-for-profit Sanctuary Care home in Watlington. Surrounded by family, friends, fellow residents and representatives from the local church community, including Reverend Val Kearney who organised the event with Watlington’s team, the occasion was a very special celebration indeed.
Dennis, who had a distinguished 25-year career in the RAF, retiring as Flight Lieutenant, spent many years travelling the world with his late wife Monica and their children, David and Janet. His son David, a retired priest, proudly delivered the Gospel reading at the ceremony.
Faith has always been a source of comfort for Dennis. For many years, he regularly attended Mattins services at St Mary’s Church in Pyrton. But in 2025, after his health began to decline, he moved to the care home in Watlington, where Reverend Val Kearney leads weekly Communion services.
Dennis said when he came to the home he was overwhelmed to find “a new life and new friends” - and decided he would like to be confirmed.
Home Manager Julie Cooper added: “Dennis is a wonderful reminder that it’s never too late to do something that is deeply meaningful. His enthusiasm and courage have inspired everyone at the home. The team and Reverend Val Kearney feel privileged to have been able to support him in making this long-held wish come true.”
The service brought joy to Dennis as he reflected on what the day meant to him: “The Bishop spoke like an old friend and it was a lovely occasion, which will be remembered for a long time. I was encouraged by my friends from the start, and I’m so pleased I listened. Much praise must go to the staff for organising everything - and the Bishop approved of the cakes!”
The event included a celebratory afternoon tea, with home-made cakes baked by the home’s chef, beautiful live music courtesy of Sophie Bevan, who sang Ave Maria and Rick Griffin, who plays at the home’s monthly Songs of Praise event.
