Eleanor’s milestone 105th birthday

A smiling elderly woman wearing a "Birthday Queen" sash and a floral shirt sits in an armchair, with a young woman kneeling beside her, both smiling. A pink birthday balloon and several framed photos are visible in the background.

Lake View Residential Care Home resident Eleanor Devey celebrated the incredible milestone of her 105th birthday recently.

To mark the special occasion, Lake View's Home Manager, Dannie Sheldon, launched a heartfelt appeal to Sanctuary Care homes across the country, as well as visiting family and friends, asking them to send birthday cards to Eleanor. The response was overwhelming, with cards arriving from near and far, giving Eleanor a wonderful two-day celebration as she opened each one and read the many messages of love and congratulations. Among them was a special card from His Majesty, The King.

Born into a family of five children, Eleanor is now the last surviving sibling. After leaving school, she began working in domestic service in a private house before the outbreak of the Second World War. During the war, she played her part in supporting the country's efforts, helping to manufacture bullets in Kidderminster before moving on to work in a factory.

Family has always been at the heart of Eleanor's life. She met her late husband, Clarence, at a dance in Ludlow, and together they built a loving family. Eleanor is the proud mother of one daughter, grandmother to two grandchildren and great-grandmother to three great-grandchildren. When asked about the most important thing in her life, the answer is simple: family means everything to Eleanor.

At Lake View, Eleanor is known as a quiet, private and clever lady, whose warmth and knowledge has made her a cherished member of the home community. Residents and colleagues alike enjoy hearing about her life and the many historical events she has lived through.

Speaking about the milestone, Eleanor's daughter Barbara Johnson said: “This birthday is a wonderful and remarkable achievement, particularly after a period of ill health last year. Reaching this milestone is a testament to her strength and resilience. For her family, it is a special opportunity to celebrate a lifetime of memories and achievements, while for everyone at Lake View, it is a privilege to share in such a significant occasion. Her birthday brings together family, friends, residents and colleagues to honour an incredible woman and celebrate an exceptional life."

To celebrate her special day, the Lake View team organised a memorable celebration, complete with cards, gifts and time spent with loved ones. The occasion brought together everyone who knows and cares for Eleanor, creating lasting memories and ensuring her remarkable 105th birthday was one to remember.
