Enriching lives through celebrations

When a resident moves into one of our care homes we see it as the start of a fresh chapter in their lives.

We believe their new home should be filled with joy and happiness, and we do everything we can to create these special moments.

Big birthdays and anniversaries are the perfect excuse to welcome the loved ones of residents into our homes, and of course for our chefs to show off their baking skills. Some of our homes have rooms which can be used by relatives to throw the perfect surprise party.

Many of our care homes celebrate religious festivals, Christmas being a very special one for so many of our residents. Children visiting from local schools to sing carols or treat our residents to sneak previews of their nativity plays are always greeted with beaming smiles. At other homes, residents will enjoy a lavish banquet, traditional dancing and prayers to celebrate Diwali, the festival of light.

Celebrating with culinary creativity

Food is always at the heart of so many celebrations in our care homes. At Christmas, our chefs prepare some truly magnificent works of art in Sanctuary Care’s annual Christmas cake competition. Now in its 12th year, there have been some spectacular entries, from an exquisite carousel to a drunken Santa falling down a chimney! Many of these have been created with the support of our residents.

Our chefs pride themselves on making mealtimes the highlight of the day. This year they competed in Sanctuary Care’s Masterchef 2019 contest, where there was a £1,000 prize for the winner!

Big birthdays are always a huge reason for our teams to pull out all the stops to celebrate. One of our residents in a care home in Worcestershire, who adores animals, has done everything from experiencing a VIP day at a local safari park for her 100th birthday to a special visit from alpacas for her 103rd.

Many of our homes throw open the doors and welcome people from their local communities along for celebrations, especially for occasions like Care Home Open Day and Silver Sunday. Many of these events are themed, with staff and residents dressing to the nines and enjoying music and live entertainment based on a particular era.

Our dedicated staff

Celebrating our amazing staff is very important to us because they are the special people enriching our residents’ lives and making them smile. Many of our staff and teams in our homes have won awards for the exceptional care they provide. We are also really excited to be launching our own staff awards very soon, so watch this space! Some of the highlights include our Asra House Residential Care Home in Leicester winning the national finals of the Great British Care Awards last year.

Another reason to celebrate is when our homes achieve ‘Outstanding’ ratings from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) or ‘Excellent’ ratings with the Care Inspectorate (CI). One of our latest to receive this accolade was Watlington and District Nursing Home in Oxfordshire. The team and residents celebrated with a party on the magnificent lawns at the front of the nursing home to celebrate their Outstanding CQC rating. There was dancing, a feast and even a flash mob, where the staff treated everyone to their own rendition of a classic hit from High School Musical!
