Building a career through apprenticeships at Sanctuary Care

At Sanctuary Care, apprenticeships are more than a qualification. They are a way to build a long-term career in care, with real progression, funded training and support at every stage.

Abbie Troop’s journey is a great example of what that can look like. She joined The Laurels Residential and Nursing Home in Derby in 2018 as a Care Assistant, with no expectation of where that first role might lead. What she found was an organisation willing to invest in her development.

Progression that works around you

After settling into her role and gaining confidence, Abbie was supported to move onto an Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship. This role supports Nurses with clinical care while allowing individuals to build advanced skills and experience on the job.

She has since progressed again and is now completing a Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship. When finished, she will qualify as a Registered Nurse, having earned, learned and progressed within the same organisation.

“I started with Sanctuary Care as a Care Assistant, and I could never have imagined where that first step would lead me.

“For anyone considering an apprenticeship, I would say go for it. The support is genuine and there are real opportunities to progress if you are willing to put the work in.”

Support beyond the qualification

For Abbie, support has gone beyond training alone. She credits her Home Manager and colleagues with encouraging her development and believing in her potential. That support continued when she became a mum in 2023, with flexibility that helped her return confidently to a role she enjoys.

“Sanctuary Care believed in me long before I believed in myself,” she explains. “That belief has shaped my confidence and my career.”
