Respite care at Christmas

Why is short-term care so important at Christmas?

Christmas is a time for celebration, but for many carers, it can also be a time of emotional and physical strain. Balancing festive responsibilities with the demands of caring for a loved one can feel overwhelming. That’s why respite care at Christmas is so valuable, not just for the carer, but for the person they support.

At Sanctuary Care, we offer short term care at Christmas across our homes, giving carers the chance to rest and recharge while their loved one enjoys a safe, welcoming environment filled with festive cheer. Whether it’s for a few days or a couple of weeks, our compassionate teams provide tailored support, seasonal activities, and warm companionship.

Taking a break helps carers return to their role with renewed energy and patience, strengthening the bond they share with their loved one. It also gives the person receiving care a chance to meet new people, enjoy new experiences, and feel part of a joyful community.

Respite care isn’t just practical, it’s a gift of wellbeing, connection, and balance.

Our Enquiry Support Team advisors can answer any questions you have about pre-bookable or shorter notice respite care, call free-phone 0800 046 4815.

Why we chose respite care and how it helped me

When Vivienne and her husband John booked a pre-Christmas holiday, she needed to know her mum, Janet, was being well cared for, with the opportunity to socialise, so she booked a short respite stay at Barony Lodge in Nantwich.

“I knew there would be lots of Christmas activities, so it would be a bit of a holiday for her too. She enjoyed herself and the team were so caring."

Vivienne and John were Janet’s carers, but with John’s diagnosis of Lymphoma, and Janet’s daughter needing support with childcare, Vivienne needed more help.

The joy in a care home at Christmas

I never thought I’d enjoy Christmas in a care home, but honestly, it’s lovely. There’s a real sense of togetherness here.

The staff go out of their way to make it special, and I don’t feel alone like I used to. We decorate the tree, sing carols, and share stories over mince pies. It’s warm, festive, and full of laughter.

Being here has brought me comfort, and a few new friends too.
