“I would like to express our sincere thanks to all staff at Don Thomson House for the outstanding care and attention to our Dad. Dad has been in the home for 6 weeks now and the change in him has been remarkable.”
Overlooking the fields and countryside, our care home is located in a quiet residential area of Dovercourt. The home is in a stunning part of Essex, a short drive from the beach and port.
The home has been a firm fixture of the Harwich community for the last thirty years, first opening the doors in 1989.
We throw open the doors for a range of celebrations throughout the year, from the annual summer fete with stalls and games galore, the Christmas fayre, complete with Santa’s grotto, and we can’t forget about our scrumptious afternoon teas. The team has even hosted a virtual summer cruise, where residents and guests experienced the traditions and flavours of places all over the world, in the heart of the home. There was a captain’s table, with everyone dressing to the nine’s for a mouth-watering dinner.
For people living in our residential care suites, the home’s community events a real highlight in their social calendar, which for many has got busier since moving into Don Thomson House! And for our residents living with dementia, they are able to experience wonderful activities and events in safe and familiar surroundings.
No two days at the home are ever the same. Not only do we support residents to stay connected to the community in Harwich, but we deliver group and one-to-one activities based on their individual likes and interests.
You can find us enjoying everything from the knit and natter club and Movement to Music sessions, to Namaste hand massages. We also have a film club and a reading club. They all provide activities in a social setting that help our residents to really thrive.
The home also has a gardening club for our green-fingered residents. The grounds have raised flower beds for residents to sow seeds with ease. With our support, they have created a wonderful area which can be admired from both the care home and the summer house.
Don Thomson House also offers short-term residential care and dementia care respite breaks. Local carers from across Harwich and Dovercourt can enjoy a much-needed break, while their loved one is cared for by our dedicated team. Please call the home on0800 917 0478 or fill out our online form below to find out more about our short-term respite care breaks.
It is usual for residents in care homes to contribute to the cost of their own care. Some people have the resources to pay for their care in full, whilst others make means-tested contributions.
Our 2022 weekly care fees for residential care start from £1,038, but maybe in the region of 20% more*, dependent on your care needs and the type of bedroom that is right for you, from our standard rooms to our premium bedroom options.
*If you require more specialist care such as 1-2-1 support, your weekly fee could be higher.
Based on an independent survey completed by our resident's friends and family.
