The Winsor Nursing Home in Somerset54 The Avenue, Minehead, Somerset, TA24 5AW
Care home admissions during the Covid-19 pandemic
Safe admissions into our care homes includes the option for new residents to self-isolate in the comfort of their own home for 11 days, before joining us in the care home where they will be tested for Covid-19 and supported to self-isolate for 3 more days until the result of the test is known.
A grade II listed building with stunning period features; The Winsor is a magnificent nursing home situated a short distance from Minehead beach.
Home manager and nurse Pat Blackett is enormously proud of her team, who go above and beyond to enrich the lives of their residents, who receive nursing care, dementia nursing care and also palliative care. One of the many positive comments about the staff in the home’s Good Care Quality Commission (CQC) report, which describes the staff as “marvellous” reads: “They are very skilled and definitely know what they are doing.”
With stunning sash windows, high ceilings, original cornicing and oak bannisters, the Victorian home is grand in appearance, but with just 38 residents has a very warm family feel.
The team tailors activities to the residents’ very specialist needs. Family members and loved ones are embraced into the heart of the home and actively take part in activities and events.
Every week children from Cheeky Cherubs, a nursery and pre-school in Minehead come to the nursing home to spend time enjoying activities with the residents. Whether making cakes, creating insect-themed hats or celebrating the royal wedding, the time they spend here is very special and the residents really look forward to their visits.
Residents also love to take part in cheese and wine and cider evenings hosted at The Winsor, as well as indulging with the occasional chocolate fountain. The team also prepares fresh smoothies daily with our residents’ favourite fruits.
Taking trips into Minehead and beyond
Just 100m from the home is the beachfront. Some of the bedrooms overlook the seafront, while others have huge bay windows giving panoramic views over Minehead, which is the largest town in West Somerset and the ‘Gateway to Exmoor’.
Residents enjoy taking trips to their favourite seaside café for an ice cream. The staff also organise visits to nearby Blenheim Gardens.
Annually there is a very special trip from The Winsor on West Somerset Railway. The team takes residents who are able on the steam train to Bishops Lydeard, where they enjoy a picnic and take in the sights along the way.
Soon there will be a Namaste room in the heart of the nursing home. Staff will be specially trained so that they can treat residents to relaxing head, hand and foot massages. The room will have soothing lighting, aromatic diffusers and vibrating heat pads for residents’ backs, creating the perfect sensory experience.
Outside The Winsor, there is a raised decking area which is a pretty and tranquil place to sit during the warmer weather. There are raised flower beds for those who like to do a spot of light gardening from their wheelchairs. The main dining room and lounge overlook the pretty front garden, which is a haven for birds and wildlife.
