Meet Rowanweald’s resident ambassador Sid

Having always loved helping others, when Sid decided to move into a care home, he knew he must continue to feel that sense of purpose and significance. His role as resident ambassador at Rowanweald Residential and Nursing Home was the perfect fit!

Like resident ambassadors across Sanctuary Care’s homes, Sid has a very active role to play in how the home is run. He welcomes new residents and their families, attends meetings and provides feedback on everything from the menus to activities. Sid, who is extremely mobile, also loves to visit the shops around the corner from the home, to do a spot of shopping for some of his fellow residents.

“I enjoy it a lot - it makes me feel useful and gives me something else to get up for in the morning,” explains the 76-year-old.

For Sid, who used to care for his neighbour, who lived with dementia, helping others comes as second nature.

“I just like helping people as much as I can, I’m just that type of person,” he adds.

Sid will soon be supporting the team when it comes to interviewing potential members of staff, and when the weather improves, he will be in charge of planting spring bulbs in the home’s garden, as he loved to do when he lived in his own home.

For Sid, his life at Rowanweald has given him the best of both worlds, he has the support of the devoted staff, while retaining his independence and feeling a real sense of belonging.
