“As soon as we walked in, we knew this was where we wanted her to be” Brian’s journey

After years of caring for his wife Hazel, who lives with Alzheimer’s, Brian knew he must face the difficult decision of finding a care home where she’d be happy. 

Having visited so many homes, he was struggling to find one which felt right. This soon changed when he discovered The Park Residential and Nursing Home in Derby, which he instinctively knew was ‘the one’.

“As soon as we walked in, we knew this was where we wanted her to be,” explains Brian. “It was just a relaxing feeling.

“The staff are so friendly and reassuring – they just made you feel welcome straight away.” 

And while Brian explains how hard it’s been for him to no longer live with his wife, it’s been made that little bit easier because of how well Hazel has settled into her new home. 

“Since Hazel has gone to The Park she’s a lot more content, compared to what she was like at home, where she used to get very frustrated. Being at the home has taken all that away.

“When you visit, she is always happy and smiling and I feel relaxed that she is being looked after. The last two years especially have been very intense looking after her 24/7.”

When Brian visits Hazel, they enjoy watching the wildlife from her bedroom, which has a patio door leading directly to the gardens.

“Hazel was a very keen gardener and that was the love of her life,” explains Brian. “From her room there’s a lovely outlook onto the gardens which is so nice. She’s very happy and content.”
